Living Arrows: 2/52: My boy is growing up…

The past week has so many photos that it’s hard to choose just one so there’s a couple.

Over the last week J has started Nursery, made the leap to actually touching a new texture (this has taken over a year!) and decided he doesn’t want bedtime nappies anymore. It feels like he is just leaping into being a ‘proper boy’ rather than a toddler. I’m not sure I’m ready for all this yet.

But I have no choice in the matter. Isn’t it frustrating that children have this habit of being on their own timetable rather than the one we want, haha.

So here is J walking to the door at Nursery. He loves to press the buzzer and then goes to wait for the door to be open. I was so anxious about Nursery as I wasn’t sure how his Autism would affect him. Would he be understood? Will he be ok with me to translate for him? But he’s loving it. It’s definately a big adjustment for J and he was emotionally tired after his first session (in fact it took about 4 hours before he’d open up again). It’s a whole new world for J.

Next achievement was J TOUCHING playdough. I’m going to do another blog post in more detail at some point but basically J does not tolerate wet, sticky and messy textures. He has never wanted to approach playdough or salt dough. He occasionally stuck a stick or a car in but wouldn’t physically touch it. But look, he is holding the playdough. He actually touched it, held it and even managed to pull some pieces off. If it stuck on his nail he would have to stop and check his hands were clean before continuing. There were times his hand would do ‘the claw’ and his fingers would stiffen as he adjusted to the texture. Thankfully playdough is quite a dry type of squishy material but it’s still a BIG step.

The last bit of news I don’t have a photo for. A couple of nights ago J announced “no nappy…big boy”. So I reluctantly put him in some ‘special pants’ and we have it a go. J is only just 3. He has been out of nappies in the day since 2 and a half but I didn’t expect night nappies to go until nearer 3 and a half. But in typical J fashion he decided he was ready and we’ve now had 2/2 nights where he is clean and dry all night. He even  woke me up at 4.30am to say he needed the toilet. So that’s it. The last ‘baby’ bits have now gone and there stands my beautiful big boy. I’ve had a few people comment that they are surprised J was toilet trained so early because he is autistic. I think it’s a vey individual thing and depends on the child. Maybe that’s another post I could write. I’ll add it to the list.
